2018 Sturgeon Bay Farm and Craft Market

July 28, 2018 By BadgerFoodie

If you follow the Badger Foodie’s Facebook Page, you know that we love shopping at local Farmer’s Markets.  The Tomah Farmer’s Market is our favorite, likely due to its location; however, we attend a variety of Farmer’s Markets around the region.  When we are on our annual Door County vacation we always check out the Sturgeon Bay Farm and Craft Market, which we did today.

The 2018 Sturgeon Bay Farm and Craft Market happens every Saturday, rain or shine, from June 2nd to October 27th.  The market’s hours are 8:30am – 12pm, and it is held in the Market Square Parking Lot at the corner of 4th Avenue and Michigan Street.  There are over 65 vendors who offer a great variety of locally grown produce to choose from, beautiful flowers, and delicious foods.   This year we noticed it spilled over onto one of the side streets which was blocked off for the Market.

Besides the normal produce you would expect at a Farmer’s Market at the end of July, it wouldn’t be a Door County Farmer’s Market without cherries!  I was surprised to see sweet cherries still available at the Sturgeon Bay Farm and Craft Market because in year’s past we have only found sweet cherries at a couple of farm stands when we are up in Door County around this time.

If buying items to take home isn’t your style, a few vendors at the Sturgeon Bay Farmer’s Market have you covered.  Like the above stand that was making fresh made to order crepes.  There were also vendors grilling up fresh meat-based items, making kettle corn, and fresh egg rolls (and other deep fried goodies).

This Sturgeon Bay Farmer’s Market is called the Farm and Craft Market for a reason.  About half of the vendors are displaying their artistic items.  The above picture is of Dan Cihlar Masonry, which boosts “Door County’s Largest Selection of Concrete Lawn Ornaments.  There were other vendors selling everything from metal work, fine jewelry, knitted items, and custom wood carvings and toys.

If you are ever in Sturgeon Bay when the Sturgeon Bay Farm and Craft Market is happening, I encourage you to check it out!

Popular Door County Brewpub to be Torn Down and Rebuilt

September 26, 2017 By BadgerFoodie Leave a Comment

Shipwrecked LogoShipwrecked Brewpub, located in Egg Harbor, was heavily damaged by an electrical fire on August 20th of this year.  Fifteen fire departments battled the blaze with support from EMTs and the American Red Cross.  The building was later determined to be a total loss.

The building that housed Shipwrecked Brewpub will be torn down with work starting on September 27th.  According to a news release, crews are planning on having the entire building taken down by October 2nd, to minimize disruptions to neighboring businesses ahead of Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch Festival.

Shipwrecked Brewpub was established in 1997; however the building dates back to 1882.  According to their website, the building was built in 1882 by George Barringer, and was a salon to serve the lumberjacks, sailors, and travelers in the area.  The building was expanded in 1904 to include guest rooms and a full dining area.  In 1912, it was renamed the Harbor Inn

In 1997, the current owners purchased the building and reopened it as Shipwrecked.  Shipwrecked celebrated its 20th anniversary a few months before the fire.  Construction of the new building is expected to last into Spring of 2018.  Shipwrecked hopes to reopen during the Summer of2018.

Shipwrecked Brewpub is located on the corner of Highway 42 and Country Road G in Egg Harbor. More information can be found on their website, shipwreckedbrewpub.com.

Stabbur Beer Garden at Al Johnson’s

Stabbur Beer Garden at Al Johnson’s LogoToday we made the annual pilgrimage up to Sister Bay, Wisconsin to Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. I was excited for this visit because in June they opened up the Stabbur Beer Garden at Al Johnson’s. This is an outdoor beer garden next to Al Johnson’s restaurant. If you’ve ever been to Al Johnson’s you know that there is usually a wait to get your table. In the past we used to walk over to the beach; however, this year we headed over to the Stabbur Beer Garden!

The Stabbur Beer Garden is an entirely outdoor space with plenty of shade. The bar seats approximately 30 people and there were additional tables throughout the space. It was great to see a variety of outdoor games to include: oversized Jenga, goat ring toss, dice, and Ladder Ball.

They had approximately 20 draft beers, a wide variety of regional beers in bottles/cans, a selection of hard ciders, and mixed drinks. You can see a sample menu they posted to Facebook. I’ve heard they will have Scandinavian food; however, I didn’t see the food choices today.

It was interested in learning a little about the Stabbur. “Stabbur” means storehouse and is the name of the building style. It is my understanding this type of building would be found on a Norwegian farm and was used to store a family’s food and protect it from the elements and rodents. This particular Stabbur was brought to the United States in 1974 and was handmade with rosemaling carvings. It used to be a dark brown and located in the back of the property by some of the other out buildings.
